The Best Programming Language for Kids, by Age and Interest

The Best Programming Language for Kids, by Age and Interest

There's no single "best" programming language for kids. The best one is the language that matches your child's age and what they want to build, because that's what keeps them going. Here's a clear guide.

By age

  • Ages 5–7: ScratchJr and unplugged coding. Picture-based, no reading or typing needed.
  • Ages 7–10: Scratch. Block coding teaches real concepts without typing errors.
  • Ages 10–13: Python. Readable, real and useful, and the natural first typed language.
  • Ages 12+: JavaScript (with HTML and CSS). For children who want to build websites and web games.
  • Ages 13+: C++ or Java. For competitive programming, deeper computer science, or ICSE and ISC school syllabi.

By interest

  • "I want to make games." Start with Scratch, then Python. Later, JavaScript for web games. See our Game Development course.
  • "I want to make websites." HTML, CSS and JavaScript. See web development for kids.
  • "I'm curious about AI." Python, the main language of AI. See AI for kids.
  • "I like maths and puzzles." Python first, then C++ if they enjoy competitive programming.
  • "I love art and design." Scratch for animation, then web design with HTML and CSS.

Why Python is the best first "real" language

For most children aged 10 and up, Python is the best first typed language:

  • Its code reads almost like English, so there's less confusing punctuation.
  • It's used by professionals in AI, data science and the web, so it's never "outgrown".
  • It's the language of CBSE Computer Science in Classes 11 and 12.
  • Children can build games, quizzes and apps quickly, which keeps them motivated.

What about C++ and Java?

Both are powerful but strict, with more rules and punctuation. They're excellent second languages. ICSE students learn Java in Classes 9 and 10, and a Python foundation first makes that much easier. More in C and C++ for kids.

The recommended order

Scratch → Python → (web development or AI) → C++ or Java if needed.

The ideas you learn in one language (loops, conditions, variables, functions) carry over to the next, so no time is wasted. It's the order our learning path follows, adapted to each child's age and experience.

Common questions

Is Scratch a real programming language?

Yes. It uses the same core concepts as text languages. Only the way you write the code is different.

Can my child learn two languages at once?

It's usually better to get comfortable with one first. Switching gets easy once the concepts are solid.

Not sure which fits your child? A free trial class includes a trainer's recommendation.
