Coding Classes for Kids in Dubai and the UAE: A Parent's Guide

Families in the UAE have more school choices than almost anywhere: Indian CBSE and ICSE schools, British schools, American schools and IB World Schools, often on the same street. That's great for choice, but it makes "which coding class?" harder, because each curriculum treats computing differently.

What your child's curriculum already covers

• CBSE and ICSE schools: computer lessons from the primary years, with coding and AI modules in the middle classes. CBSE's Computer Science in Classes 11 and 12 is taught in Python; ICSE's senior computer applications uses Java.
• British curriculum schools: the English National Curriculum includes computing from Key Stage 1, moving from block coding in primary to a text language such as Python by Key Stage 3, and GCSE Computer Science after that.
• American curriculum schools: often follow standards based on the CSTA K–12 framework, with AP Computer Science options in high school.
• IB schools: coding usually appears through design and project work in the PYP and MYP, with Computer Science available in the Diploma Programme.

A good coding class should start from where your child is in their curriculum, not put every child through the same fixed course.

Online or in person?

Weekday traffic in Dubai, and between Sharjah and Dubai, can make an after-school class across town a real commitment. Live online classes remove the drive completely. The difference that matters is live vs. recorded: a live trainer can see where your child is stuck and help right away, which a video course can't.

Timing in Gulf Standard Time

The UAE is 1 hour 30 minutes behind India. That's why online classes with India-based trainers fit easily into UAE after-school hours and weekends: a 5 pm class in Dubai is 6:30 pm in India. Since 2022 the UAE weekend has been Saturday and Sunday, and weekend mornings are a popular choice.

Questions to ask any coding class

1. Is it live and 1:1 or small-group? In big groups, quiet children rarely ask questions.
2. Does it adapt to my child's curriculum and level? Ask how they'd teach a CBSE Class 6 student differently from a Year 7 British-curriculum student.
3. What will my child build? Look for real projects (games, websites, AI experiments), not just worksheets.
4. Is there a free trial? You should see a real class before paying.
5. Is the price clear? Watch out for different prices per course or hidden add-ons.

Where to start by age

• Ages 8–10: Scratch and coding basics, with games and animations.
• Ages 11–13: Python, often the biggest confidence jump.
• Ages 13+: Web Development or AI & Machine Learning, depending on interest.
