20 Coding Project Ideas for School Students, by Class

Projects are where coding really sticks. A child who builds something they care about learns more in a week than in a month of exercises. Here are ideas by class, each with the skill it teaches. Pick ones linked to your child's hobbies.
Class 3–5 (Scratch)
- Animated name: each letter moves or changes colour. Teaches: sequencing, events.
- Interactive greeting card: click to play music and animations. Teaches: events, sound.
- Choose-your-own-adventure story: the reader picks what happens next. Teaches: conditions.
- Maze game: guide a character through a maze without touching the walls. Teaches: sensing, conditions.
- Catch the falling apples: with a score. Teaches: variables, loops. (Step-by-step in our free Scratch course.)
Class 6–8 (Scratch to Python)
- Quiz game with a high score: on any school subject. Teaches: variables, lists.
- Number-guessing game in Python: Teaches: input, loops, random numbers.
- Times-table trainer: random questions with a timer. Teaches: loops, conditions.
- Platformer with levels: in Scratch. Teaches: game logic, gravity.
- Calculator app with buttons: Python and Tkinter. Teaches: functions, GUI events.
- Image classifier: recognise gestures with Teachable Machine. Teaches: how AI learns from data. (Free AI course.)
Class 9–10 (Python, web and AI)
- Personal portfolio website: HTML and CSS. Teaches: web structure and design.
- Cricket stats explorer: load a table of scores and chart them. Teaches: data handling.
- Homework planner app: add, list and tick off tasks. Teaches: lists, files.
- Beginner chatbot: answers questions on a topic. Teaches: text processing, AI basics.
- JavaScript quiz website: Teaches: DOM events and interactivity.
Class 11–12 (advanced)
- School library or inventory system: with a database. Teaches: SQL, data structures. (Useful practice for CBSE Computer Science.)
- Weather or news dashboard using an API: Teaches: APIs, data.
- AI app solving a real problem: for example sorting recyclable waste from photos. Teaches: model training and evaluation.
- Capstone: a problem your child cares about, planned, built, tested and presented. Teaches: everything.
Tips for successful projects
- Start small, then add features. A working simple version beats an unfinished ambitious one.
- Use your child's interests: sport, music, animals, a favourite game.
- Keep a project folder or portfolio. It's motivating, and useful for school and applications.
- Present it. Explaining a project to family builds confidence and understanding.
