Scratch for Kids: A First Coding Language That Doesn't Feel Like One

What Scratch actually teaches
Scratch drops the syntax entirely. Instead of typing exact commands, kids drag and snap together visual blocks — so the very first lesson isn't "memorize this keyword," it's "here's how a loop works." Students build the logic first: sequencing, flow control, conditions — the same concepts every programming language is built on, just without a missing-semicolon error standing in the way.
In practice, that logic gets applied through storytelling: designing characters and scenes, then coding them to move, talk, and react — building games, animations, and interactive stories from scratch (the pun is unavoidable).
